What is a collapsed bite?

My dentist informed me that my bite is collapsing, my teeth are terribly weak and literally crumble. Also there is a ridge behind my teeth where it feels like my bottom teeth has ground away the top ones...

So once again what is a collapsed bite and how is it recitified. Thanks

oh geez. this is not something i like to tell patients. basically your teeth are getting shorter due to wear. once it collapses sufficiently you start to become symptomatic. popping jaws or biting down on soft tissue are the two most common problems. the treatment is extensive and is refferred to as "opening the bite." on average you can open someone 3-7mm but you can go more. you start treatment by wearing a mouthpiece similar to a night guard that keeps you mouth open to the desired future position. after a few months of that your jaw muscles get used to the new position and it's time to restore the teeth. this involves crowning almost all the back teeth or maybe all the teeth. yes, it's expensive but the alternative is full mouth extraction and dentures that you will hate. the good news is that you will finish with the best smile you could ever have. good luck

Ugh. Too much sugar maybe. Ask your dentist to explain your condition better.

A collapsed bite is exhibited by the upper front teeth overlapping the lower front teeth excessively, or the chin and nose are too close together. This may cause facial wrinkles and deep creases above and below the lips. These are usually caused by any loss of dental height in the back portion of the mouth causing what the dental professional calls a "deep overbite." Deep overbites may predispose our patients to symptoms of headaches, neck aches, ear pain, dizziness, difficulty swallowing pills and many times suffering of stomach reflux problems. The restorations are expected to last a lifetime with proper brushing, flossing and fluoride rinsing at nighttime. Also included in the maintenance process are regular dental checkups and cleanings.
